The Blue Fins enjoyed blue skies at Chimney Lake yesterday for their second annual ‘Smoke on the Water’ open water swim. Seventeen swimmers took to the cold water of Chimney Lake. Four were returning from last year: Walter Rees, Martine Vitoratos, Abbi Taylor and  Geneva Gordon.

The Williams Lake Bighorns Midget Lacrosse team finished ‘close to the medal’ at the C Division Midget Provincials in Coquitlam July 22—24.The team played Port Coquitlam in their first game and won 7-4. It was a close game until the 3rd period when the Bighorns scored three goals.

Skateboarders provided high-octane entertainment on Canada Day in Boitanio Park in a competition that showcased the skills and finesse of young athletes at various levels of experience.

The Swim BC Double-A provincial championships were in Kelowna over the weekend and several Blue Fins were there.

Winning three medals was Geneva Gordon with a silver in the 100m breaststroke, bronze in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Female rugby players competed in try-outs this weekend for the Provincial U18 Rep Rugby team, which is highly competitive and takes only the best rugby athletes the Northern Zone has to offer.

It's official: the Lac La Hache Tomahawks will be icing a hockey team for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The team is going to consist of players from around the Williams Lake and 100 Mile House areas, and play in the Senior AA, Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL). “Following the league AGM on Saturday two teams were accepted, our team and the Quesnel Kangaroos,” says Al Navrot, who will be the team's head coach. “The hard work is just starting. Our first goal was to get into the league, and finding more sponsors is the next step. Our executive still has a long road ahead.”

Despite weeks of rain and muddy trails, the Williams Lake Off-Road Motorcycle Association hosted the 10th annual Dirty Knobby Bike Race on Saturday May 28th.  The event took place on Mountain House Road in 150 Mile House and included approximately 65 riders from around the Williams Lake area.

The Williams Lake Cycling Club hosted the second annual Peel Out Mountain Bike Festival this past weekend in Williams Lake. The event was a huge success growing by 45% from 2010 with 140 participants. In addition to racers, another 35 people from around the Interior were in Williams Lake riding and participating in the festival.

The weekend began with the Fox Mountain Downhill Race. A beautiful day and perfect course conditions blessed the 124 riders who took part. The pro-men’s winner was local favorite Cory Brunelle who posted a new course record of 4:57, beating out pro rider James Doerfling who took second at a time of 5:05. Both riders are from Williams Lake.

Yesterday the Rugby ‘Ice Breaker’ brought four teams of girls from Williams Lake Secondary School and Columneetza Secondary School to the field at WLSS for some fierce rugby action. The junior teams from both schools had a 3-3 tie game, and in the senior game WLSS trounced Columneetza with a score of 11-0.

The first weekend of Spring Break, the Bantam girls team travelled to 100 Mile for the ‘Attitude on Ice’ all-girls tournament, where they had two wins , one loss, and played in the final game against Kamloops to whom they’d previously lost.  However, the girls played their hearts out and won 3-1, taking home the gold medal for the Bantam division.
