Lake City Derby Girls season rolls tomorrow
| Sports |
The Lake City Derby Girls held their first practice of the season at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex last weekend coached by Manney Haurez and Mr. Kriminal. The women are prepared for their season opener bout against the Armstrong Candy Strykers which will happen this Saturday in Armstrong at Hassen Arena.
The team will be joined by five dedicated derby dolls from Tournament City Derby Girls of Kamloops, including Acid Doll, Jo Fifi Fourbyfour LeFlufy, Celestial Beatings, Yvonne the Terrible, and Asylum Alice, who made the drive to train with the Lake City Derby Girls in Williams Lake for the day last weekend.
Roller derby was introduced to Williams Lake by Mel Ablitt and her husband, Troy, in November 2009 when they first started the Lake City Derby Girls. The team’s first home bout, “Summer Slammer”, was held at the Complex last August. The bout was an enormous success with over 600 people in attendance. Since then the team has been successfully recruiting 'fresh meat', or rookies, to join. Fresh meat practices are held every Friday at Nesika Elemenatry School at 7:00pm.
Five of the senior players, or 'patched' girls who have passed a minimum skills test requirement, will be playing in this Saturday night’s season opener bout in Armstrong. The team extends an open invitation to anyone in the lake city who would like to join them in Armstrong to cheer on their home team derby girls; Mel-A-Licious, Cracker Her Box, Kriminal Cutie, Maranator, Foxie McMuff, and Bombshell Gizmo will all be playing this weekend.
