On the week of June 6th through 10th students from the Williams Lake area elementary schools had the opportunity to demonstrate their individual power, strength and endurance at the annual Track and Field meet. Students in Grade 4 through Grade 7 competed against their peers for points that go toward their schools.

Both Arnie and Donny Kunka won their main events this weekend during ‘Fan Appreciation Night’ at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Arnie broke his own track record once again,  took 2nd in the trophy dash, besides winning the heat and the main.

Donny placed 2nd in the dash, 1st in his heat and even though he started out at the back of the pack and got spun out while in the lead, still took the win. 

“All clear!” the teacher’s voice broadcasts down the line of little archers. Excitedly the intermediate students from Cataline Elementary School’s Archery Club gently lower their new compound bows to the soft grass and hurry to gather their arrows from strategically placed hay bales on which balloons have been fastened. Friendly encouragement seems to be the theme of this club as students admire each other’s well-placed arrows. Naturally, the ones which have come closest to the center of the target get pulled last. On the next round each youngster will strive to shoot a little better than the last time.

The Williams Lake Secondary School Girls Rugby team held a BBQ at Walmart yesterday, raising money for a trip to New Zealand during spring break in 2012.

Former Williams Lake Blue Fin swimmer, Kimberley Bryan made good on a lifetime goal last night at Canada West Swim Championships at UBC. Swimming for the University of Victoria, Kim ranked 17th going into her first swim of the competition (50m Backstroke) finaled in 9th place with a best time of 30.83. This qualifies her for CIS Nationals in February.

Her second swim of the day was to anchor UVic's 800m Freestyle Relay team to fourth place overall. Competition continues all weekend with live streaming of the finals at www.swimbc.ca

Wayne Madill from 150 Mile House and Karen and Darrell Valair from Hope were the winners of the Williams Lake Blue Fins swim club draw this weekend, held at the Sam Ketcham Memorial Pool. Both received a 7-day cruise and were surprised and delighted to win the spectacular prize.
