Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett presented a cheque for $2000 to KidSport Williams Lake representatives yesterday at the Cariboo Memorial Complex as part of the Province of British Columbia’s Olympic Sport Legacy Fund. This support to KidSport from the Province will assist KidSport BC in meeting their objective this year of helping more than 5,000 children play a season of sport.

 “We are committed to providing value through organized sports for all children, and financial need should not be a barrier,” said Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Stephanie Cadieux. “This funding will also help some of the local KidSport volunteer chapters to leverage support from other partners, corporations and service organizations in helping young people get active through organized sport.”

Locally the Williams Lake chapter is grateful for this generous donation – it is like Christmas in March. The funds will allow local children to participate in hockey, soccer, baseball, gymnastics, martial arts, figure skating, swimming and a multitude of Sports BC organizations. These funds complement the money that has recently been received from the Canadian Tire JumpStart program, Operation Red Nose and private donations.

According to Pete Quevillon, Director of KidSport BC; “ Thanks to the generous support of the Province through this legacy of the 2010 Games, KidSport will help more kids realize their sporting dreams than ever before. In our 39 community chapters and through our central fund, we anticipate helping more than 5000 kids to play a season of sport.”

KidSport is the charitable arm of Sport BC and since 1993 has provided support to families facing financial barriers to assist children with the costs of sport registration fees. Through its 39 community chapters and the provincial office, more than $800,000 in grants were distributed in 2009/2010.
