Although it won’t be visible to our eyes locally, November 13 and 14 marks the event of a total solar eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and totally or partially blocks the sun from our view. When the moon’s diameter appears larger that the sun it will block all daylight – a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth. A partial solar eclipse is visible over thousands of kilometres.

In tomorrow’s eclipse, totality will be visible from northern Australia and the Chilean Juan Fernandez Islands. The biggest city to experience to total eclipse will be Cairns in Australia.  Parts of northern New Zealand will experience a partial eclipse.

This will be a dramatic event, but thanks to modern technology, everyone will be able to see it. Several different organizations will webcast live views of the total solar eclipse, which begins at 12:35pm our time on Tuesday, November 13. It will actually be November 14 local time in Australia.

The online Slooh Space Camera will broadcast a live feed of the 2012 total solar eclipse from a site near the city of Cairns, in the Australian state of Queensland, starting at 11:30am Tuesday. “The eclipse will commence around sunrise local time, making for a particularly memorable spectacle”, Slooh officials say.
