what-to-do-summer-2012Celebrate our diverse community this week by enjoying the festivities of the Chief Will-Yum Pow-Wow and National Aboriginal Day:

Friday June 15

New at the Cariboo Growers Market this week are hamburger patties, green cabbage, tomatoes, nugget potatoes, 'Easter Egg' radishes, beet greens and mini Romaine lettuce. There is also cheese and yogurt from Gort’s Gouda, and Stevia plants from Horsefly., as well as packages of raw white button mushrooms.

The Williams Lake Farmer’s Market is in Boitanio Park from 9:00am to 2:00pm on Fridays. They have many wonderful local products, including baked goods, canning, fresh local produce, crafts, lunch, and much more. Featured this week is Vancouver’s folk/roots trio, 'Willy Blizzard.' Everyone is invited to the 25th Annual Chief Will-Yum Pow-Wow at the Chief Will-Yum RV Park and Campsite. The weekend will include coming out ceremonies, giveaways, a Father’s Day celebration, and a traditional feast on Saturday at 5:30pm. Free camping for the weekend begins this evening at 7:00pm and ends on Sunday June 17 at 5:00pm. Call Virginia Gilbert at 250-296-3128 for more information.

The Library hosts Preschool Storytime from 10:30am to 11:15am today for ages 3-6.

There will be a fundraiser for battered women and their children in our community which will include a donation drive. The theme for June is Toys for Toddlers and Teens. There will be consultants with local businesses at the Long House all weekend from Friday June 15 to Sunday June 17. They will have make-and-takes, mini workshops, tastings, raffles, and much more. Fees include gift bags, five meals, and all snacks and beverages. A ticket for the whole weekend is $55.00 and drop-in fees are Friday for $10.00, Saturday for $25.00, and Sunday for $25.00. Today, the event will run from 6:00pm to 11:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am to 11:00pm, and Sunday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Tickets are available at Champagne Day Spa on 2nd Avenue.

The Royal Canadian Legion hosts their Friday Meat Draw from 5:00pm to 6:00pm this evening. They are located at 385 Barnard Street in Williams Lake.

Saturday June 16

There will be a Craft and Flea Market in the 150 Mile Centre parking lot every Saturday and Sunday until September 30, 2012. The market will be open from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Table space costs $10.00 per day or $15.00 for the weekend. Call 250-296-4515 for more information.

The Oliver Street Market in downtown Williams Lake welcomes the community to a great weekend farmer's market experience, with locally grown and produced vegetables, meats, crafts and live music.

Today and tomorrow, join everyone at the MamaQuilla Studio in Horsefly for a two-day celebration of the versatile textile felt. Saturday June 16, there will be an all-day workshop, 'Introduction to Felting,' for $50.00 with all materials provided. Space is limited, so please register early. Sunday June 17, MamaQuilla hosts a free event which will be open to the public. The free event, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, will include hands-on demonstrations of felting techniques and natural dyeing, displays and talks on the history of felt, and felt around the world. They will have children's activities as well as local felt artisans and their wares. The studio is located at 4905 Beaver Valley Road in Horsefly. Call 250-620-3205 for more information.

The Legion hosts their Saturday Meat Draw from 3:00pm to 5:00pm this afternoon.

Sunday June 17

Sundays at the Legion, crib and shuffleboard will be available beginning at 1:00pm. Everyone is welcome.

Monday June 18

StrongStart is held at Cataline, Mountview, and Marie Sharpe Elementary Schools each week from Monday to Friday. The program is available from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

This week at the Station House Gallery is the Cariboo Art Society's 68th Annual Show and Sale. The Gallery is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The Show and Sale will be held until June 30.

The Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Club is holding their annual fun-filled Seniors Ride. The event will take place at the Senior's Village in Williams Lake at the end of Western Avenue. There will be a number of draft horse teams pulling wagons, including the wheelchair accessible wagon purchased by the club. Chuck wagon food will be prepared by Dale Martin, who is representing Tolko's Ten Year Club. Country and old time musical entertainment will be provided by local volunteers Rossetta Paxton and Gwen Cyr. The Lions Club is also volunteering, as well as generously providing the tables and chairs for this year’s event. For more information, contact Eileen at 250-305-9234.

The Caribou Brain Injury Society has a Coping Strategies Group which meets every Monday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The group aims to help survivors of brain injury learn positive methods of coping with the effects of their injury. To register for this group, contact the Society at 250-392-7772 for an intake meeting, as this group is for victims of acquired brain injury.

Tuesday June 19

150 Mile House Elementary School has the StrongStart Program from 8:30am to 11:30am every Tuesday.

Free Storytime in Kiwanis Park will be available each Tuesday from 10:30am to 11:00am under the tree. This event is weather permitting and is for all ages.

Rhyme and Storytime is available for ages 0-5 and their parent or caregiver at Glendale Elementary School every Tuesday from 9:30am to 10:15am.

The Library offers Toddler Time from 10:30am to 11:00am every Tuesday for ages 0-3.

There is a women's bible study every Tuesday at 1:00pm at the Salvation Army (next door to the thrift store). All interested women are welcome to join.

The Department of National Defence invites you to a public information session concerning activities (military and other) on the Chilcotin Training Area. The format will be an open house with poster presentations and representatives of user groups will be available to answer questions. Refreshments will be provided and you are welcome to arrive any time during the open hours. The session will be located at the Coast Fraser Inn in Williams Lake from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.

Wednesday June 20

The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex Fitness Centre offers Free Seniors Fitness Orientation for those adults 55 and older. Registered personal trainer Judy Orosz will provide an orientation to the facility and teach you about how to use the equipment safely, gym etiquette, and what times of the day would be best for you to work out. She will help you gain confidence in using the equipment and answer any questions you have regarding your own fitness. Please call 250-398-7665 in advance to book your complimentary session.

Chilcotin Road and Nesika Elementary Schools host Rhyme and Storytime each Wednesday for children ages 0-5 and their parent or caregiver. Chilcotin Road hosts the program from 9:30am to 10:15am and Nesika hosts from 11:00am to 11:45am.

The Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at C.J.’s Southwestern Grill at 12:05pm.

From 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Wednesdays at the Salvation Army, join Ellen Paynton for a Women’s Only Fitness Class. This is a free program for women and child minding is available. Call the Women’s Contact Society at 250-392-4118 for more information.

Thursday June 21

The TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) BC Group 4145 meets every Thursday across from Safeway. The meetings are from 8:45am to 10:00am. For more information or directions, call Ada at 250-398-5757 or Corinne at 250-392-4772.

Wildwood Elementary School hosts the StrongStart Program each Thursday from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

The National Aboriginal Day Parade starts at 10:00am on the corner of 1st Avenue, travels along Oliver Street up to 8th Avenue, then into Boitanio Park. Events in the park will begin at 11:00am and conclude at 2:30pm. There will be bannock stands, face painting, arts and crafts, a talent show, poetry reading, a bouncy toy for younger children, and much more. This year’s theme is 'Youth,' so there will be a Youth Role Models float as well.

There will be an Aboriginal Day celebration at Thompson Rivers University, with booths and events, refreshments and activities, beginning at 11:00am after the parade. 

Drop-In Traditional Rug Hooking Classes are available every Thursday. Join this free class to learn how to make your own rugs from new and recycled fabrics. Call Sharon at 250-296-4432 for more information.

Every Thursday, the Legion Branch 139 hosts Pasta Thursday, a Legion fundraiser. Dinner is from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and includes pasta and sauce, garlic bread, and caesar salad, all for just $6.00. The Legion would like to welcome the community to participate in this wonderful evening of good food and great company.

Mainstream Square and Round Dance is held every Thursday evening at 7:00pm at the Child Development Centre in Williams Lake. Everyone is welcome, so join them and have some weeknight fun.
