what-to-do-winterThis week, there are many events to enjoy, including fundraisers and fun activities for the family as well as a couple for yourself and your Valentine:

Friday February 10

Cariboo White Cane Chapter is hosting an exciting vision event from 10:00am to 3:00pm in the upper level of Boitanio Mall that will include demonstrations by a BC Guide Dog/Autism Service Dog trainer and puppy, displays of devices to help the vision impaired and important information about the health of your eyes. There will be a silent auction, refreshments and a chance to meet 'Tex', a service dog and his human.

The Library hosts Preschool Storytime from 10:30am to 11:15am for ages 3-6. The Royal Canadian Legion hosts their Friday Meat Draw from 5:00pm to 6:00pm this evening. They are located at 385 Barnard Street in Williams Lake.

New this week at the Grower's Market are jams with only two ingredients (fruit and no-sugar-needed pectin). You can choose from 'just plum',' just apple' or 'just cherry' and are welcome to try a sample of the 'just apple' variety at the Market. There are also new varieties of apples: Jona Gold, Spartan, Newtown and Granny Smith.

Saturday February 11

The Legion hosts their Saturday Meat Draw from 3:00pm to 5:00pm this afternoon.

The Wildwood Community Association is having a family Valentine's Day dance on Saturday February 11 at 6:00pm. This is a fund raising event with proceeds going to the Wildwood PAC and towards the Full Season Multi-Use rink. There will be a silent auction, spot dance prices, door prizes, two bands playing and much more. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. Admission is $5.00 per person or $10.00 per family. Sunday February 12

021411_draft_horsesThe Cariboo Draft Horse Club is hosting their annual Valentine's Day sleigh ride, weather permitting. The ride will take place on Anderson Rd, 5km up Dog Creek Road from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday February 12. Monday February 13

The StrongStart program is available for ages 0-5 from Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 12:00pm at Marie Sharpe, Cataline, and Mountview Elementary Schools. This is a play-based learning program and is a great way to get your little one ready for kindergarten.

The Wildwod Community Association is having its monthly meeting at the Wildwood School at 7:00pm on Feb 13. For more information please call Oleh at 250-989-2372.

Tuesday February 14

150 Mile House Elementary School has the StrongStart program every Tuesday from 8:30am to 11:30am.The Library offers Toddler Time from 10:30am to 11:00am every Tuesday for ages 0-3.

Local potters have been working hard to make a variety of bowls for the 'Empty Bowl' Luncheon of 2012.Those attending the fundraising event for the Salvation Army Food Bank will be served a delicious lunch of soup and bread for $15. The pottery bowl is yours to keep. The fundraiser will be held at Alley Katz Bistro on Borland Street beside the RCMP Detachment on February 14 from 11:00am until 3:00pm.

The Station House Gallery has After-School Art Classes each Tuesday and Wednesday. This is a fun, flexible program which offers multiple learning opportunities. Wednesday February 15

The Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at C.J.’s Southwestern Grill at 12:05pm.

This week at the Library will be a documentary called Marking African Heritage Month, a film about the rise, fall and redemption of Harry Jerome, track and field star and one of Canada’s greatest athletes. Gorgeous monochrome imagery, impassioned interviews and astonishing archival footage are used to tell the compelling story of what has been called “the greatest comeback in track and field history.” The film will begin at 7:00pm in the library program room. The Williams Lake Speed Skating club meets for practice each Wednesday from 3:15pm to 4:15pm. The cost is $75.00 for ten sessions. For more information, contact Yvonne at 250-398-2354.

From 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the Salvation Army, join Ellen Paynton for a Women’s Only Fitness Class. This is a free program for women and child minding is available. Call the Women’s Contact Society at 250-392-4118 for more information.

Thursday February 16

Wildwood Elementary School has the StrongStart program from 9:00am to 12:00pm each Thursday.

Every Thursday, the Legion Branch 139 hosts Pasta Thursday, a Legion fundraiser. Dinner is from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and includes pasta and sauce, garlic bread, and caesar salad, all for just $6.00. The Legion would like to welcome the community to participate in this wonderful evening of good food and great company.

Tonight's Armchair Traveler presentation is 'Walking the Camino de Santiago' with Joan Beck. This free event will take place at the library at 7:00pm. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is recommended.

Mainstream Square and Round Dance is held every Thursday evening at 7:00pm at the Child Development Centre in Williams Lake. Everyone is welcome, so join them and have some weeknight fun.
