020111_Great_Places_in_CanaThe first annual Great Places in Canada contest is now nearing the halfway mark, and as people across the country nominate and vote for their favourite locations, some interesting trends are emerging.

As of January 25, 2011, the results so far are:

In British Columbia., George Little Park Spirit Square in Terrace has attracted 1,330 votes - far more than any other location in Canada, and way ahead of the top pick in Vancouver, Van Dusen Botanical Garden, which has 189 votes.

In the Prairie Provinces, the Town of Canora in Saskatchewan is the leader with 183 votes. The top place in Alberta, RiverWalk in Calgary, has 97 votes. The Exchange District in Winnipeg is the front-runner in Manitoba with 47 votes.

In Ontario, Zwicks Park in Belleville has the most votes with 546. Interestingly, Toronto leads with the most nominations, but this has split the voting with its most popular place to date, St. Lawrence Market, getting only 28 votes.

In Quebec, Le Parc des Chutes Montmorency leads with 791 votes but Auberge le Baluchon is right behind it with 787. These are the second and third most popular nominations in Canada

In the Atlantic Provinces, Pippy Park in Newfoundland and Labrador leads the way with 592 votes, with City Market in Saint John, New Brunswick, being a distant second with 64 votes. The Hydrostone in Halifax has 57 votes while Prince Edward Island's Charlottetown has 42 votes.

"We're seeing a great deal of friendly rivalry as Canadians vote for their local places, and the competition is heating up as we enter the last two months of the contest," says Steven Brasier, Executive Director of the Canadian Institute of Planners.
