Challenges and recommendations for wood stove exchange
| News |
Tonight at City Council, Tammy Keetch, Air Quality Educator presented a delegation on the Wood Stove Exchange Program in Williams Lake. She offered a brief overview of pollutants in Williams Lake area and the health effects.
She said that particulate matter is the greatest concern for the area--from vehicles, dust, construction, fires, wood stoves and mills.
"Certified EPA stoves produce 90% less particulate matter," she said, adding that public education is another important part of the program.
25 stoves were changed out in the CRD and Williams Lake--in the Williams Lake airshed area.
She said that challenges included pensioners not being ale to afford a new stove, even with a rebate, and dissatisfaction from retailers about not enough advertising on the exchange program.
She said that recommendations for the future, if the program runs again are setting a time limit for completion and offer larger incentive to increase participation.
