Williams Lake benefits from United Way

Last year the United Way campaign raised $42,000 to contribute to the community, and yesterday at the A&W restaurant, the money was given out to various community organizations.
Francy Hayward, United Way Coordinator, and Melodie Grabner, United Way Campaign Manager thanked A&W for their hospitality, and said that the United Way campaign in Williams Lake is already looking good for next year. Joanne Stacey, Cariboo Board of Directors representative, distributed cheques to the various groups.
The Food Policy Council received $12,500 to support food recovery projects, school and community gardens and greenhouses, as well as funding the Food Action Coordinator.
Cariboo Park Home was given $2,250 toward a safety railing at Glen Arbor, the Salvation Army received $3,500 for updates to the kitchen for their food program, Social Planning Council received $10,000 to start Access Williams Lake and Women’s Contact Society was given $6,110 toward their Good Food Box program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters received $4,500 to support their mentoring programs, Boys and Girls Club accepted a cheque for $5,000 for their after school programs for 7-12-year-old kids and the Child Development Centre received $3,140.

Glen Arbor resident Ardis Bennett and Cariboo Park Home Society President Maureen Tickner said that they have been working towards getting the exterior safety railing for five years. “There are seven of us who need the railing,” said Ardis, and Maureen added, “It will help the residents get safely out to the garden area, where there are raised beds for vegetables and flowers.”
