PostHeaderIcon Changes to False Alarm Bylaw in Williams Lake

Mayor and Council are considering amendments to Willams Lake's current False Alarm Bylaw, to improve its overall effectiveness.

The primary change to the false alarm bylaw is to remove an exemption from a fee in cases where the alarm has been cancelled prior to the RCMP or Williams Lake Fire Department arrival and within five minutes from the time of dispatch to the RCMP patrol unit or the Fire Department.

All false alarms, whether cancelled immediately or not, will be assessed a fee. Within the first five minutes after an alarm, a response has already been initiated and expenses have already been incurred.

PostHeaderIcon First annual Alexis Creek Run/Walk fun for the whole family

The first annual Community 10 km Walk/Run, designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, took place in Alexis Creek this past weekend. “What a day we had!” said Kelly Feldinger, Alexis Creek Community Club President. “Warm, sunny weather made the event even more enjoyable.”

Twenty eight of the 31 people who registered to participate, walked, ran and even cycled the route. “Unfortunately, nasty shin splints and terrible colds kept three people away,” Kelly added. The youngest participant was a six year old girl who rode her bike, the most ‘seasoned’ runner was 55+ and many dogs ran alongside their owners, as well.  Garrett Madley came in first in the 19-49 years run category, despite wearing his work boots for the entire run.

PostHeaderIcon Gentles back in court to face seven Criminal Code charges

Williams Lake man accused of drunk and dangerous driving back in court.Last week Martin Gentles was rearrested and charged with the same seven charges he was charged with shortly after the fatal pedestrian hit and run incident which occurred on Sunday, April 22, 2012 near the bottom of Carson Drive in Williams Lake.

While proceedings began almost immediately after the accident, some documents, including a pathology report, an analysis report and other documents from the hospital in Vancouver were delayed. "In July 2012, Crown Counsel made the decision to collapse the proceeding," said Sergeant Verbree Regional Commander Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services out of the Williams Lake RCMP detachment. He states that was a good tactical decision and may have prevented the case getting thrown out down the road, citing ‘Regina vs. Askov’. The Charter of Rights guarantees that "Any person charged with an offence has the right... to be tried within a reasonable time."
