A futsal tournament was held in Williams Lake last weekend to raise money to build a playground at the Esler Soccer Complex. The Tournament of 'futsal, also known as 'soccer', began last Friday night with a round robin and the remaining games and playoffs held on Saturday.
The Williams Lake Ladies Soccer Association put on the tournament and games were reffed by volunteer referees whose service was immensely appreciated. Approximately 65 players participated, including six teams from Williams Lake.
There were a number of close and exciting games. The players for the team who came out on top were: Carrie Kerley, Ashley Johnston, Lindsay Thiessen, Dani Wood, Gina Alexander, Mark Thiessen, Chad Enns, Dave Peaver, Josh Mayard and Brad Thiessen.
The soccer tourney was followed by a social on Saturday evening at Oliver Street Bar and Grill, and included a buffet and drink specials, as well as a silent auction. 50 people attended the social which was sponsored by several businesses in the community.
Among the items auctioned off were a GT Snow Racer provided by Canadian Tire, a quilt made by Elaine Watt, a drill from Windsor, a Save-On goodie basket, a gift from Curves, a home reno basket donated by United Carpet, plus various items from Caribou Ski, Margetts Meats and 150 M & S Tire.
According to organizer Katie McMahen, the soccer tourney and silent auction raised approximately $18,000.
