One of the topics at the Cariboo Regional District Board meeting on Friday was the exemption of the CRD portion of the 2012 property tax for the Forest Grove Legion. Director Art Dumaresq pointed out that all other Legions in the region get tax exemptions and that the Legion in Forest Grove should be no different.

(The Forest Grove Legion is described as the ‘hub of the community.’ )

Director Dumaresq said that the Local Government Act allows a tax exemption with a two-thirds vote. “Municipalities grant this, and so should we,” he stated.

He explained that in Forest Grove a lot of things go on at the Legion besides drinking at the bar. "A significant number of community events take place at the Legion, including funerals. The Legion is the hub of our community.

"There are a lot of people in the Forest Grove area, and most nights the Legion parking lot is full.

"I’m appealing to you to consider this. The CRD portion of the taxes should be about $2,000. It doesn’t sound like a lot of money for us, but it is a lot of money for the Forest Grove community."

“We do have decreased taxes for Legions in the bigger centres,” said Director Glassford. “We’ve supported a lot of other causes, and I think this is something we should support.

“I don’t know any other facilities in CRD areas that are like the Legion—it is completely unique.”

The recommendation was voted for unanimously by the Board of Directors, with the final decision to be made by the BC Assessment Authority.
