PostHeaderIcon Let's kick some ‘ice’

New to the Cariboo
new_to_cariboo_lgDoes the rain and ‘ice’ fall mainly in the Plains or in the Cariboo?

(This Transplanted Texan finally learns to pronounce ‘ice’.)

Canada hosts many diverse cultures, and the Cariboo is no exception. Therefore, it's no surprise that my native tongue and way of pronouncing words doesn't always work well up here in the Cariboo and amongst other transplants that have made this area their home. This deficit has caused considerable consternation both at home and away from home and the most requested word I'm asked to repeat is ‘ice’. This request comes after the requester has caught their breath after enjoying several moments of intense and full-body belly-laughter. I repeat the sentence in which the word ‘ice’ is used and the laughter usually resumes.

New to the Cariboo

031713_new_caribooBOne thing I noticed when investigating how life might be in The Cariboo after it appeared I might move here--there were lots of Celtic sightings.

Streets named after the Irish, Scots, or Welch, many pubs with green shamrocks or 0'Somebodies or McSomebodies business establishments, Pipe, Fife, and Drum Corps concerts and participation in parades seemed to be quite common. This was very pleasing to my 'Celtic Bone'. And how did I know I had such a bone or heritage? I was told by my parents that I was Scotch-Irish (with a little Indian for a pleasing tint to me skin, which really came in handy in the Texas sun.)

New to the Cariboo

My 2012 Bucket List, my first snow girl and other year-end observation.

123112_sherry_new_cariboo

I named her ‘Marinda’. Why? I don't know. I can't seem to find what the name means on the info sites I've searched. Now Maranda is a different matter. It's Spanish and means admirable. Not that I think my first snow sculpture, a that term I use loosely, is admirable, but I did it! I've been wanting to make a snowman for the past two years and I got it done on December 31st! Yay me! I can scratch that one off my 'Bucket List' as well as a few others, including:

1. It's New Years Eve and I'm in the Cariboo. Yay! Going into my seventh month as a permanent resident. Signed, sealed, and delivered, I am into British Columbia, Canada with documents and cards to prove it.

Snow-skill sets

by Sherry Day Foster

In less than 24 hours I've acquired two new snow-skill sets. How can that be, one might ask? Simple. It snowed, and I got to drive in the sludge and learned to operate the snow-blower/thrower. I've been waiting on this particular snowfall ever since I got here - almost six months.

For the benefit of the many readers of New to the Cariboo in East Texas, I must say, "These skills will probably never be of any use to you where you currently live." The only reason I post them now is simply to brag, a Texan skill which I'm quite proficient at. Yeah, yeah, I know the correct way to write that last sentence is ...a Texan skill at which I'm quite proficient. But somehow it just doesn't sound right, when written correctly. It sounds too fancy--too put-on. (I just added those last two sentences to let y’all know I'm educated. Can't be too careful when you're the new kid on the block.)

New to the Cariboo

new_to_cariboo_lgFive things I love about the Cariboo and two I don't

By  Sherry Day Foster

1. The weather

As previously stated, I love the weather, be it warm or warmer, it's never hot or hotter. Cold or colder is doable, although sometimes it tests my endurance. I love knowing there are four real seasons to enjoy, even if each brings challenges.

New to the Cariboo

110212_new_to-caribooIce tales from a Texan in the Cariboo

By Sherry Day Foster

Yesterday, on the first day in November, I got the idea to tiptoe out on the veranda and capture an ice picture. I thought it turned out pretty good, considering that I was in some socks and the ice ripped them off my feet and my feet stuck to the bricks. I was really happy when none of the skin was ripped off when walking back into the house barefoot. I only got one picture because my feet were so cold. My dear, sweet husband quietly slipped on his snow gear and took his fancy/dancy camera out to see what his lenses would capture. Well, a girl can only do what a girl knows how to do. And in this ice, it ain't much.

New to the Cariboo

By Sherry Day Foster

Thanks folks, for the many queries regarding my quest to see King Salmon, find some finger-licking BBQ and experience my first Thanksgiving in the Cariboo. It's a great feeling to know how many are reading New to the Cariboo. Sure makes me feel welcome during my first few months as the newest kid on the block. It is my pleasure to report that, as of late--the day after Canada's Thanksgiving, to be precise--I have finally seen King Salmon and had some BBQ that satisfied my Texas taste buds.
