The band will benefit from the fourth round of funding from BC’s First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund with capacity funding of $15,000.
“This is very good news,” said Stone Band Councillor Gabe Pukacz, who explained that heating costs are a big issue for the school. “It’s electric heat and is very expensive.”
Project details include determining the reasons that residential power costs are so high and establish methods on how to reduce power costs for the Yunesit’in school and health centre.
Gabe said that they want to look into bio-energy alternatives for the school and the community. “We’ve been thinking about things like solar power, geo-thermal opportunities and wind turbines,” he continued.
Stone Band Manager Lena Hink issued special thanks to the Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, on behalf of Chief Ivor D. Myers, Band Councillors Gabe Pukacz, Darnell Myers, Molly Hink and Douglas Myers, and from Heather Curtis, Economic Development Officer.
