The 150 Mile Fire Department responded to a call from an elementary school yesterday — the annual Fun Day at the 150 Mile School. The event included a 50’ slide down a 30 degree slope with a fire truck that provided true momentum and entertainment for the kids.

Fire fighters from the 150 Mile Fire Department volunteer their time every year to provide high-energy fun for the kids at the school, and Principal Calvin Williams said that the fire department is an integral part of the competition.

Intermediate students were divided into four groups for the annual competition, performing their own creative and energetic cheers. There were approximately seven stations, including sack races, inner tube races, bouncy toys in the gym, an egg toss and a big slide with the fire department.

Principal Calvin Williams and Vice Principal Yvonne Davis said that today was a great example of a school and a community coming together.

Yvonne explained that the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) ran the concession for the event, and said that they are working to build a hard surface to use for two tennis courts, two ball hockey courts and two basketball courts. The area is now a hard-packed flat dirt surface, with concrete going down in July.

“We had $30,000 last year to put in a 'big toy' behind the school, and then the government reimbursed us,” she said. “We’d been saving for four or five years, so with this windfall we decided to put in something that would benefit the school and the community.”

She said she is sad to be transferred to 100 Mile House—a move mandated by the fact that enrollment at the school is not quite enough to warrant a Vice Principal. “You need 300 students to have a Vice Principal, and the school is right now at 284,” she explained.

She said that, despite the teachers’ strike, all of the children who wanted to play any sports this year were able to, because there was both a Principal and a Vice Principal at the school, but that that will change with only one administrator.

Both Calvin and Yvonne said that the kids loved having the fire fighters there for Fun Day today, and that their presence really helped make the event exciting and fun.

The fire fighters provided a slide made more slippery with dish soap applied liberally at the top. They sprayed kids with water, pumped by the fire truck from a portable reservoir. As part of the challenge, the kids had to take a yogurt container filled with water down the slide with them, carry it with them through the 'big toy', and run back to the top of the hill with as much of the water remaining in the container as possible -- so they could dump it over their head when they reached the finish line.

The fire fighters said that they thoroughly enjoy the event, and look forward to it every year. They also added flair to the event by participating in a free-for-all water fight.

When Fun Day was drawing to a close, one young student called out, “Firemen—thank you very much for coming!” and the other students joined in, before performing a thorough clean up of school grounds.
