The Canadian Cane Corso Association’s first sanctioned match took place on Saturday at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds. It was a ‘practice match’ recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and organized by Canadian Cane Corso BC Regional Director Debbie Woods.

Deb explained that the practice match included conformation and obedience. “They ‘breed’ your dog against a written standard for the confirmation event,” she said. “In obedience, there are pre-novice and novice categories—all the way up to ‘utility’, where the dogs have to do things like go over jumps and perform scent discriminations.”
The ages of the dogs included puppies, ‘altered’ dogs and ‘graduates’, who have five or more points already in a CKC sanctioned show.
The event was very well attended—25 dogs for conformation and 22 for obedience. “In order to register you have to have a pure-bred dog registered with the CKC,” she continued. “It’s like a real show, but no points—owners get prizes and ribbons for their participation.”
Another ‘first’ at this event was the official ramp used for the dogs. Debbie’s husband Chip hand-crafted the ramp to ‘spec’ with the Cane Corso Association logo on it, and also built four tables used at the event, as well as signs for the ring.
Debbie said that the judges were Susan Quesnel for confirmation and Lou Dobie for obedience, adding that there was a ‘rescue’ information booth with lots of information about the Cane Corso breed.
She explained that Cane Corsos are not for everyone. “They need an owner who uses positive reinforcement methods and consistent socialization. They can’t be a dog stuck in the back yard—they need to be worked constantly.”
“We’re the only recognized parent club in Canada, and we want to promote more of this in the Williams Lake area,” she noted. “This event was very well-received by participants, who said that it was well-organized. People said that they learned a lot and that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”
