It was surprisingly easier than I thought it’d be to get Mr O into a teahouse for lunch Saturday afternoon, but yet that was where we found ourselves, with very little effort on my part.  The New World Coffee & Tea House is our stop for the day and the first thing you see when you walk in is the large array of different teas, boasting about 70 different varieties in fact, available for sale all along one wall.  Quaint little tables are sprinkled throughout the roomy space, at which you can seat yourself.  If you do, someone will bring you a menu to look through, but if you’d rather grab something quick to go you can order straight from the front counter.

PostHeaderIcon Pacing yourself at Sir Bob's Fish and Chips

Welcome back to our regularly programmed schedule!  My date tonight is Mr O and tonight he drove me over to the Sir Bob’s Fish and Chips restaurant.  We don’t often visit this part of town, so this was actually my first time eating here.

It’s snowing outside and temperatures are hovering around the minus 20 mark, and I pondered to myself… Why brave the outside weather when we live in an age where dinner can be brought *TO* you?  Right to your front door, in fact?  So with my mind set I scoured the phonebook and came up with basically two alternatives which deliver… pizza or Chinese food.

By a vote of 2-0, pizza won out and we decided to give the good folks at Red Tomato Pies a call.  They now sit where Canadian Pizza 2 for 1 used to be, and they must be doing something oh so right because I keep hearing good things about them.  Thus, I was quite comfortable venturing outside of my realm of comfort, where pizzas were concerned, to give them a try.

PostHeaderIcon Lunch at Beeotcheese Bistro and Bakery

The restaurant with what is probably the most mispronounced name in town is the Beeotcheese Bistro and Bakery.  Bee-yot-cheese… yes it sounds exactly like what you think it sounds like… but what a fun name!

Today I had lunch there with Mrs C and Mr Jay and we had a great time.  The first thing you see when you walk in is the display of freshly baked goods, all lovingly homemade of course.  Get some while they’re warm and you won’t regret it.

Once seated, you will be given two separate menus; their regular standard one which features a list of permanent food choices, and one that changes up every week.  If you’ve only ever ordered from their weekly menu (like I do) it’s like going to a new restaurant each time… and I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered.

You know that feeling you get when you’re craving raw fish?  Well that’s what I was experiencing yesterday, so after work I convinced Mr O to take me out for dinner at the local Japanese restaurant, Sushi California.

This establishment had its humble beginnings at the Williams Inn, but have moved to its current location just last summer and have since flourished.  Their menu is extensive and includes a variety of Japanese dishes, sashimi, traditional sushi and fusion sushi.  And if you’re not as keen on Japanese food as your companions are you will also find a selection of different Asian-type dishes, steak, and even western cuisine.

So the hubbing and the bubbing of Christmas and New Years is now behind me and I can finally look forward to enjoying a day off of work with absolutely *nothing* to do… what bliss!  So really, the only thing on my schedule today was lunch with Miss L at Karen’s Place, and my biggest challenge was deciding what I wanted to eat.

You probably know by now that Karen’s Place had undergone some extensive renos in the past couple months and have expanded their space (and if you didn’t… now you do!)  It is much roomier now, while still retaining its homey atmosphere.  A huge mural done by Dwayne Davis adorns the entire back wall of the extension, and they’ve de-cluttered the layout of the original restaurant, even adding in a nice bar for those who want to eat in a hurry.  It’s so reminiscent of a diner

PostHeaderIcon Want some dimsum?

I've been away from home-base for the last week, which means that I haven't been able to visit any of the local establishments thus far.  So I've decided to change things up a bit for this week's article of Eating it up in the Cariboo. Instead of reviewing a restaurant I've decided to make this week’s column into an informal tutorial, so to speak.  Today's topic is all about dim sum.

In Cantonese, dim sum is literally translated as ‘touching the heart’.  It usually consists of various types of dumplings and small dishes of all types of savoury meats and buns.  One goes to ‘yum cha’ to eat dim sum.  Translated, yum cha is ‘drinking tea’ and it is ideally a brunch event with friends and family.
