The shops in the Delainey Centre in Williams Lake have recently welcomed a new neighbor. ‘Exposed Expressions Tattoo Studio’ has opened its doors, with owner Danarae Latin on hand to offer clients a unique way to express their individuality through art.

What makes Danarae’s studio stand out is the setting and the artistic, professional décor--warm, comfortable and inviting. Danarae explained that it has ‘arts’ behind it, not body modification, and that it is less intimidating for people who have always wanted a tattoo.

072612_tattoo_handShe added that she will soon carry clothing, cosmetics and jewelry, and will display artists in a gallery-type setting.

Danarae said that one of the biggest reasons people get tattoos is to remember. “They get memorial tattoos because they want that person to be connected to them,” she stated. “People also get tattoos for self expression, for their personal being and sometimes because of a trend.  “Sometimes people come in with a specific design they’ve chosen, but mostly people have an idea and they want me to design and create a tattoo--I design their vision.”

Intuitive, caring, and a good listener, Danarae gives her clients options and choices, and a tattoo that expresses what they want, what they feel and who they are. She is friendly and good at connecting with a wide range of people.

072612_tattoo_sinkDanarae’s studio is impeccably clean, her equipment fresh and sterile and the health and safety of her clients is upmost in her focus and concern.

“I set up the tattoo machine with the customer there so they can see how clean and sterile everything is. I clean and shave the skin, apply the stencil to imbed the design in the skin and then I do the actual tattoo,” she explained. “I have an autoclave for sterilizing the grips and the tips, and all the needles are disposable.”

Another very important part of the process is communicating very clearly with her customers about how to keep their new tattoo clean and healthy and being available for follow-up support as needed.

072612_tattoo_art“I always send them home with information, ointment and instructions,” she said. “I am available for any follow-up questions or concerns.”

She said that when someone comes in on an impulse, she makes sure that they really want a tattoo and that they know what is involved. “I try to find out what they really want,” she added.

Danarae describes herself as an artist and that she knew that she wanted to do art from the moment she was born. “I didn’t know where I wanted to go with it, though. I was sitting on my deck one day trying to figure out how I could do art and make a living at it.

“I had a family member who was a tattoo artist, and he took me under his wing. He let me do my first tattoo on his back—a big tattoo. ‘Go for it,’ he said.

“I took right to it. I think either you can do it, or you can’t.

“After that I was self-taught, and did tattoos for two years. Then I left it alone for a while—not altogether sure about it. I got laid off from my job, ended up in accident and life went for a ‘flip flop’.

072612_tattoo_hands“And then I did something that changed my life. I ended up going to the Tattoo Learning Centre in New York City for three weeks. It was amazing—it built my confidence level and my awareness. It refreshed everything for me and reassured me that all my self-teaching was right on,” she continued.

“I went to Employment Services, and that’s how I found this place at Delainey’s. I wanted this space so badly—I went running to Community Futures.”

She took the Community Futures self-employment course, and said that besides financial backing she received a lot of business knowledge. “It was so great having a support network of a group of people starting businesses,” she said. “I have fantastic friends from the course.”

In November she is going back to New York to take a portrait class.

As a new business she said that customer service is everything. “I believe that’s true for any business—or it should be. It doesn’t matter who you are or what kind of tattoo you want, you are welcome here and I will do my best for you.

“If you’re not thrilled you can come in for a free touch up or small alteration,” she said. “I want you to like your tattoo forever.”
