Be safe as you travel this long weekend
| News |
The RCMP Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services would like to remind all persons traveling over this long holiday weekend to consider the following:
-
Drinking or using drugs and Driving is a bad idea, the carnage from this affects us all. There is always another way to get to where you need to go, taxi, bus or call a friend. One person injured or killed is too many.
-
The use of a seat belt is mandatory in British Columbia and is the best safety device in an automobile. When worn correctly in conjunction with an airbag, there is as high as a 95% crash survival rate.
-
Talking or texting while driving is extremely dangerous and results in far too many crashes, injuries and deaths. Ask yourself if you would close your eyes driving down the highway at 100 km/hr for up to 7 seconds. The answer is probably no.
At the end of the day its all about personal safety for you and your family members. Police will be conducting increased enforcement this weekend. "Have an enjoyable Victoria Day weekend, and be safe out there, your family and friends are counting on it," said Sergeant Robert Verbre, Regional Commander of the Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services.
British Columbia's natural resource officers, park rangers and conservation officers will also be busy over the Victoria Day long weekend helping residents and visitors enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday.
Provincial officials step up their patrols in May every year, especially on holiday long weekends.
- Natural resource officers, conservation officers and the RCMP will be patrolling Crown land, waterways and recreation sites to ensure public safety and protect the environment. Natural resource officers also enforce the forest recreation regulation.
- Park rangers will be patrolling BC Parks and enforcing the park, conservancy and recreation area regulation to enhance public safety and protect sensitive ecosystems.
- Conservation officers will be checking permits to protect public safety and enforcing environment, fish and wildlife regulations. They also will be patrolling recreation sites.

Got News Network has learned that, as the result of yesterdayâs traffic incident on Highway 20, the drivers dog is missing.
The dog, a black border collie with one white foot, was in the truck at the time of the incident. It ran away from the commotion, but has since been spotted in the area by family members who have been actively searching for it. The dog is wearing a white collar and may be dragging leash. It may be hanging around the site of the accident, or may be heading west to make its way âhomeâ.
RCMP members have searched for the dog, as well as members of Central Cariboo Search and Rescue, and will continue to do so throughout the day and evening. Measurements have been taken to entice the dog back to the spot it was last seen, based on the experience and advice of the Williams Lake SPCA.

Barnett secured a solid lead early, with a 72 vote margin over Wyse, a trend which continued until all 137 ballot boxes had been reported. At the end of the day, Barnett sidelined Wyse with 2,699 votes.
